Impact of land-use land cover dynamics on runoff in Panchnoi River basin, North East India

Abstract Alteration of land-use land cover pattern causes severe consequences on the hydrological system by modifying rainfall-runoff in a region. The study aimed to investigate impact land-cover dynamics runoff generation different geomorphic divisions Panchnoi River basin. used Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number method estimate basin GIS platform. This observed that conversion zones significantly enhances runoff. Piedmont experience highest change, where 64.17 km 2 forest lost cropland and built-up lands, leads notable increase generation, i.e. from 1 076 mm (52.82% rainfall) 1990 467 (70.46% 2015. Flood plain New alluvial generates high as it mostly occupied human-induced land-uses, 444 (72.72% 360 (71.70% respectively 1990, which 1588 (79.20%) 1507 (78.69%) 2015, due alteration lands. In Old plain, marginal change resulted moderate growth 272 (62.35%) 404 (66.79%). indicates invokes can give rise environmental economic problems river basin, through occurrence flashflood soil erosion. Highlights for public administration, management planning: • Evaluation is essential containing flash flood water resource scale. natural covers has implications form flood, erosion, loss biodiversity. Enhanced reduces groundwater recharge rate may cause drinking scarcity dry season shortly.
